What is Salsa?

Salsa means sauce in Spanish. According to Wikipedia, Salsa is a common ingredient in Mexican cuisine, served as a condiment with tacos, stirred into soups and stews, or incorporated into tamale fillings.

We know salsa is traditionally made with tomatoes, onion, and hot peppers with some form of acid to brighten it.  The amount of heat is much debate, and it always seems like someone has a unique version.

Fun fact, salsa became popular in the 1980s in Mexican restaurants; however, it actually originates from the times of the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans!  Crazy right!?!

Well, let’s not waste any more time and get started!

Homemade Salsa Ingredients

  • 1 lb of fresh tomatoes or 1 (14.5 oz)  can of diced fire roasted tomatoes in a pinch.
  • 1 (10 oz can) Rotel mild or hot to your preference
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 -2 serrano pepper, deseeded and membranes removed (leave in if you want a fiery salsa)
  • 1/2 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 cup cilantro or less
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Juice from 1/2 lime

This homemade salsa recipe is the perfect balance of heat and sweetness.  The Rotel provides a smoky flavor, the serrano pepper adds a bit of heat, while the honey and lime juice balance it with sweetness and acidity. You can adjust the heat level to your preference by adding more or less serrano pepper. If fresh tomatoes are not an option, the fire-roasted can from the market will do. Perfect for any occasion and will be a hit at your next gathering.

How To Make This Salsa Homemade In 10 Minutes

Are you ready to make the most delicious homemade salsa? It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 with this recipe. First, add the onion and garlic to the food processor and pulse until well chopped. The garlic and onion will provide an excellent base for the salsa, giving it a subtle sweetness and a hint of sharpness. As you chop them, the aroma will fill your kitchen, making your mouth water in anticipation.

Next, add the roasted tomatoes or canned roasted tomatoes and the Rotel. The fire-roasted tomatoes and Rotel will add a delicious smoky flavor to the salsa, making it truly irresistible. The canned roasted tomatoes will give you a similar taste but using fresh tomatoes will add an extra layer of freshness.

Then, add the serrano pepper, honey, salt, cilantro, and juice of the lime and pulse until well combined. The serrano pepper will add a bit of heat to the salsa, while the honey and lime juice will balance it out with sweetness and acidity. You can adjust the heat level to your preference by adding more or less serrano pepper. The cilantro will add an extra layer of freshness and flavor, combining all ingredients.

Finally, transfer the salsa to a serving dish and enjoy! This salsa is perfect for dipping with your favorite tortilla chips or topping for tacos or burritos!   Remember, you can adjust the heat level to your preference by adding more or less serrano pepper. Feel free to adjust the amount of cilantro to your liking as well.
